What are your metrics or qualification to categorize a company as 'good' or 'best'?

This depends so much on what style you are after and your budget. There is simply no across the board answer to this question. In terms of selection, an online store is a good bet, but be very careful as many online furniture stores use unreliable manufacturers that drop ship 'mid' to low quality RTA (ready to assemble) furniture. Since so many online sellers use the same exact manufacturers/dropshippers, it's important to acquaint yourself with the manufacturers themselves,(before picking an online seller) because the warranties, replacement parts and returns will be handled by them and NOT the online seller.

For your consideration below are my top three suggestions for low to mid range furniture manufacturers:

Low end:

Prepac - Modern looking, livingroom and bedroom furniture

This company is located in Canada and produces a small but great quality selection of RTA bedroom furniture. The furniture is pretty solid (albeit MDF) and very consistent in quality as they rarely change their inventory. Everything comes with good assembly instructions and they have managed to obliterate 90% of the 'broken on arrival' issue with their one of kind foam injection packaging. If anything arrives broken they replace it rather quickly no cost to the buyer.

Mid Range:

Southern Enterprises (SEI) - modern/transitional, country cottage kitchen, livingroom and office furniture

Located in Dallas Texas and family owned and operated, I have always been a huge fan of this company. They offer original, elegantly designed, kitchen, livingroom and office furniture. Their buyer has great taste, and their furniture will give your home the upscale look at very affordable prices. Replacement parts are sent out quickly, again, at no cost to the buyer.


Mid range:

Linon - modern/transitional furniture, livingroom, kitchen, bedroom,

Nice furniture, quick shipping and decent quality as well. They recently acquired Powell furniture to become one of the biggest RTA companies in the industry. I don't know much about Powell, but I would recommend Linon in terms of overall quality and quick shipping.


There are a number of other great companies out there, such as Whitewood Industries, Pastel etc.. but these are my personal favorites. Again, if buying online; learn about the manufacturer first, then pick a reputable online seller.
